Teaching Morphology

Part 1: Direct Instruction of Word Parts

  • In context — words/sentences from text

  • Teach meaning of word part(s)

  • Point out morphological cognates (when applicable)

  • Students generate additional examples

  • Foster metalinguistic awareness through think alouds

  • Add morphemes to the ongoing “morphology bank”

Part 2: Negotiation of Meaning

  • Students put their developing understanding of word parts into action by constructing and segmenting words to discover their meaning.

  • Students articulate their understanding in partner and group discussions and games.
